Switzerland captain Stephan Lichtsteiner has signed for Arsenal on a free transfer after being released by Juventus. Lichtsteiner has played in Serie A for 10 years, which included 3 years at Lazio before joining 'The old lady of Turin'.

He can play right back/wing back and right midfield and is a solid in defence rather than going foward. There is no doubt he's a strong and experienced defender but at 34 years old how much has he got left in him, what with the pace of the Premier league?

I get the plan is he's a short term fix but will he be? thats the question and I suppose if he can help us back into the champions league next season he'll be worth every penny we're paying him.

The limited budget for transfers makes signings like these inevitable lets hope they get it right and use whatever money they have for 'real buys' wisely.

Lichtsteiner is a Grade A cunt. I sat and watched a CL match between Juve and Celtic a few years back, and this guy was all over one of the Celtic playerss like a cheap suit. The only thig he didn't do was wrestle the Celtic guy to the ground and fuck him.

Seems Arsenal's new regime is batting big in the defensive stakes and it looks to be Sven Mislantat's doing for the most part.

Having already secured the services of ex Juventus and Swiss captain Stephan Lichtsteiner on a free, the gunners are said to be near the signing of Dortmund's 29 year old centre back Sokratis Papastathopoulos, known as the colosuss of the German club's defence.

In addition, the Gunners are in negotiations to bring RB Liepzig's 22 year old right back, Lukas Klostermann to the Emirates. Arsenal have eyed this player before but with a more defensive minded administration in place, it looks like a move for him now is more likely.

So, what signs does this all send to the likes of Bellerin, Monreal, Mustafi, Koscielny, Chambers and Holding? - the old guard is changing?

At the other end of the pitch, there are rumours that Arsenal are in negotiations with Barcelona and Ousmane Dembele with a view to bringing the 22 year old striker to the Premier league.

Although Barca have said they have Dembele as a long term investment in their side, it's thought they may be persuaded if Jack Wilshere or Hector Bellerin or both were included in part of the deal.

A little fact..

Only four British teams have made the finals of the Champions League and Europa League in the last ten years.

Rangers
Man Utd
Chelsea
Liverpool

That's not really that good!!

Not when you consider the money getting thrown about down south and the fact Rangers were disqualified form competing in Europe for years after people claimed we were on the fiddle.

Arsenal have signed Dortmund central defender Sokratis Papastathopoulos to add to their other signing of right back Stephan Lichtsteiner earlier in the month.

Sokratis was a key player for the German side and is known as a strong no nonsense man at the back. His signing will not be announced until after the world cup but pen has already been put to paper.

The Gunners are also closing in on a £22million deal for 26 year old German goalkeeper Bernd Leno from Bayer Leverkusen with a view for him to take the number 1 keeping role from Petr Cech who had a very poor time last season, with number 2 keeper David Ospina set to leave the club as well.

It seems the defensive side of the team is being overhauled at a pace, unsurprisingly because we have fallen short in that department for many years now. There doesn't appear to be any movement for attacking midfielders or strikers as we have a plethora but a good holding midfielder is next on the cards.

That may come in the guise of Lucas Torreira who has had two successful seasons at Italian club Sampdoria. The 22 year old Uruguayan has made the most successful tackles/ interceptions in Serie A for the last two seasons and despite his young age is said to be one of the best ball winners in the Italian league. He is also a fine distributor of the ball and can score spectacular goals from range. Arsenal are said to be well into negotiations for the player and hopefully will get his signature after the world cup.

So things are looking brighter than they did at the Emirates just a month ago, all it needs now is to get rid of the dead wood and for Emery to turn the players who remain and the new arrivals into a team.

One football story, which tickled me years ago, was a woman who had saved up ages for her husband's really special present, his first season ticket for Newcastle for a decade. She had the brilliant idea to give to him for a Christmas present. :gigglesnshit:

:yikes:

Two Charlton Athletic footballers accused of a sex attack on a British woman in Ibiza have appeared in court.

Recco Hackett-Fairchild and Karlan Ahearne-Grant, both aged 20, were arrested on Tuesday after the 19-year-old woman reported a sexual assault in the village of San Jose.

The Foreign Office said it was aware of the allegations and was in contact with the family and Spanish authorities.

Charlton said it would not be commenting due to the investigation.
