Anyone know how the groups are drawn for the first stage? There's usually two strong and two weaker sides per group so it doesn't look like a random draw.

It’s a bit complicated but basically the top 8 teams go in separate groups. Then there’s a pot 2 with the next best 8 teams. They are drawn out and placed into a group. Then the next best 8 are in a pot and drawn into a group and so on. They try to keep teams from the same continent apart as much as possible so sometimes teams are redrawn if theres too many from Europe for example...

So you've got two Turks in the German team who met the Turkish President, one of whom said he was "his President".

And you've got two Kosovans in the Swiss team, one with the Kosovo flag on one of his boots, taunting the Serbian crowd yesterday.

So they question is, if they're so patriotic, why are they playing for Turkey/ Kosovo instead of Germany/ Switzerland?

Not because they're bigger, better teams surely?

This explains how the teams are seeded in the draw -

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2018_FIFA ... up_seeding

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FIFA_World_Rankings shows how the seedings are determined.
