RUSSIA 2018 - THE WORLD CUP THREAD.

A right load of bollocks...

So the first proper shocker of the tournament sees Germany lose their opening game despite the tremendous effort they put into the second half which was only matched by Mexico's dogged defending.

Thats an impressive record for Mexico's Marquez. Came on to take the captain's armband mid to late second half giving himself the magnificent achievement of playing in 'FIVE' world cup tournaments, now that is something.

Germany are bruised but make no mistake they'll still qualify and go very far in Russia 2018, there is no doubt of that.

Taken aback by Mexico's front foot and at them attitude from the start is more like it, they didn't give the Germans much time to settle their game. Dogged defending in the second half against what was a massive German onslaught of the highest calibre, kept Mexico in the game and in fact they had several opportunities on the break to put the game to bed.

If there was any over confidence from the Germans it was quickly extinguished within about ten minutes of the start. The Mexicans were shattered within minutes of the restart but held on to their slim lead with great team effort.

They are in general not high scoring affairs because the teams playing against each other are the best on the planet and extremely motivated even if they are the underdogs,

It's not basketball.

First group matches are rarely high scoring.

It depends which teams progress. Iceland or Switzerland will never score hatfuls of goals for example, Spain etc could do. The concept of this format is to slowly improve.

Brazil 1 Switzerland 1

Brazilian diving is disgraceful, if you can't beat Switzerland organically cheating isn't the way forward. :shake head:

The Swiss team are making the Brazilians look very ordinary. 5 minutes to go plus stoppage time 1-1.

A couple of surprises today, definitely, which can put some pressure on the fancied teams as Argentina, Brazil and Germany are under a bit of pressure to qualify.

Up to us tomorrow to finally put in a good performance in the first match of a tournament - we will see.
