Which sport or pastime do competitors compete for the Da Vinci Trophy?

I never even knew there was a Trophy named after Da Vinci. I'll have to google but wont post the answer.

It was from a Google buster quiz from around 10 years ago, I just had a quick look and couldn't find anything, but I suppose that quiz itself might now be Googleable

Is it a team or individual competition?

I don't know tbh, but going by what it is, I would say more likely individual.

I Googled and found the answer straight away.

Yes, individual usually.

so i will narrow it down---largest in its time and its time was the early to mid 20th century

That would cover WWII - is it something in Dresden?

getting warmer

Warmer in location or warmer in that's it's a building that was bombed in the war?

The only one I could see was to do with a video game, but it's not that.

What did you find?

I don't know the building, but is it in Berlin?

Maybe something to do with war itself - I would guess at a Nazi or Gestapo HQ?

That would be an ecumenical matter.

An engineer comes up with a plan to lay a 10,000 km rail line across Russia. He has a new design that means the rail can be laid in one single piece, clamped down at each end. Critics say the rail will expand and buckle in hot weather with disastrous results. The engineer reassures them, it's very safe - he's using a special metal that means the rail will only expand in length by 1 cm, and it's designed to buckle upward at it's weakest point, the middle, and so the amount it lifts by will be negligible.

Were they right to be reassured? If you remember some geometry and you're handy with a calculator you could take a stab at it. You can ignore the Earth's curvature, and other stuff, and assume the rail starts out flat. Diagram obviously not to scale.
