Its not real :dunno:

Its really sad talking about soaps on forums

male suicide is a very important topic, and the portrayal was very well done and it moved me. Enough that I wanted to post about it.

I only watch EE and it has totally lost it's guts on relevant or gritty storylines - so I never knew that Corrie was highlighting such an important topic.

Well done to them.

For decades and decades thousands of blokes (especially those from a working class background) covered up the debilitating illness of depression by self medicating with drugs and/or alcohol as it was seen as a huge 'weakness' and a source of terrible 'shame'.

With disastrous and often tragic consequences for both them and their families.

In recent years however it is finally beginning to lose some of it's stigma and male suicide can now be prevented in numbers greater than ever before with effective treatments.

They didn’t do the drug or alcohol part. Just straight up depression and suicide, although it hasn’t been explicitly stated. Very very well done and very emotional. I think anyone who has felt that despair would have seen it and felt it in that last scene.
Subtle, but poignant.

And I cried.
I didn’t even cry at Armageddon

Yeah I was just commenting that that is often how men (and women) deal with the Black Dog NN. :smilin:

But huge kudos to Corrie for doing a straight depression/suicide storyline.

So many lives are lost each year to this terrible affliction. :shake head:

I actually cried at Armageddon - tears of laughter at Willis's fucking atrocious acting.

"People called Goodwife should kill themselves"

I don't give a shit who you are that's not acceptable :hand:

I think it would be very acceptable if you killed yourself.

I am aware of the storyline and I have it recorded as usual, but I’m undecided as to whether I will watch it or not.

I’m hoping they’ve done the storyline justice and highlight that help is out there if people need it.

I can’t imagine how difficult it would be. It’s just very sad on the whole, and I think you’d be able to pick up from the next episode without missing too much (except maybe the Eva bit. You’d have to read the spoilers for that bit).
It felt very well done to me. You just wanted him to reach out, tell someone. Anyone.
I think the aftermath will be the decider as to how well they highlight the availability of help.

Since the Tories decimated the mental health service in the 80's the suicide rates have gone through the roof.

But at least people are talking about depression in males now - it did not exist before.
