Frosty, you can look up the Microsoft tax, but essentially it is that the windows operating system is not free even when you buy a new computer. You cannot buy a PC from a brand named company without windows, so if you wanted to put on say linux you still have to buy windows. I think in America you can now get a refund from Microsoft that you have to apply for but most people don't bother because of the aggravation.

Now what ever gave you the impression that you cannot put the music you own on an Apple product, my entire music collection is on my Mac's (2 of them) plus an iPod Classic and mostly on my iPod touch (I say mostly because of the storage capacity). iTunes is actually free for both windows and the mac OS.

I used (and still do but rarely) Microsoft machines since the early days of DOS. During all this time (over 25 years) to me Microsoft has only had a couple of solid OS platforms, one was Windows 3.1 and the other Windows 7. In the past decade Windows XP has had nothing but security holes ripped right through the system, in fact if you went on the internet with XP and no security software at all your machine would pick up a virus/spyware/malware in minutes. I will admit that Microsoft got it right (largely) with Windows 7 (where they copied many many of the features from the MacOS). For PC users Windows 8 has been a complete disaster with only a global 9% take up rate because it is basically crap and really meant for tablets (you know what tablet computers are, they are the clones of the iPad).

Now having said all that the PC's dominate the global business environment and rightly so, Mac's are not very good at a couple of things, large networking and hardware upgrades etc. There are also a couple of areas where mac's are downright shit at compared to windows, one is file management (windows explorer shits all over the mac's Finder) the other is email, the mac's email systems are dreadful compared to even Microsoft Live Mail etc.

Mac's (in my opinion) has windows beaten hands down in the home and small office environment (particularly creative companies). Mac's are easier to use, 99% safer online and photo/video editing beats windows hands down. I have used a few mp3 players over the years, iPods shit all over any of the competition for ease of use and yes even style, and the thing is they work. The iPod revolutionised the music industry as did the iPad for other things.

I love my iPad but it is not the best tablet for business because of its limitations (it is shit) in file manipulation and sharing including photos and video. An iPad is however brilliant around the home, it runs all my music and video remotely to my TV's and stereo equipment, Facetime shits all over Skype as well.

I would never go back to a windows machine despite some of the Mac's shortfalls because the benefits significantly outweigh shortfalls. I have on my desk an iMac 27" and a Dell PC (my wife uses the Dell), I can tell you now that just looking at them the Mac is 10 times more stylish in it's design, no tower no dozens of leads to speakers etc. I've had the Mac for about 9 months and it has not once locked up or given me the blue screen of death, the Dell on the other hand has crashed and locked quite a few times.

Yes the Mac can get frustrating but no where near as the windows machine. You never know the next Windows OS (presumably Windows 9) might just be barely good enough to use because windows 8 is a fucking dog.

By the way I do run windows 8 on my Mac mostly for a couple of programmes that I like that don't natively on the Mac, it runs extremely fast and I've had no locking up issues......but it is a fucking dog of an OS to use.

o god, I thought that these people just infested Macrumors and the Verge comment section.

Keith's an old bloke with a bit of cash to spend and can't be arsed to do anything but be a bit of a cunt to waiters at times and will always go for form over function. An ideal Apple drone. Sorry m8, I've managed around fifteen years without any sort of malware infection and I know enough about the hardware to buy stuff that's compatible rather than being a cheap penny pinching plonker who wonders why they get a hardware failure screen when they are stressing out a system with stuff that it isn't designed for.

Your post is total bullshit and is simply opinion. Now go back to your Fisher Price 'my shiny computer' and back up those opinions.

Still waiting Stoo, why is my post TOTAL BULLSHIT...in the meanwhile if my post is total bullshit then then I'm sure that you think the following is correct, you know opposite to the points raised in my post.

There is no microsoft tax
The music you own cannot be put into iTunes
My entire music collection is not on my iPods etc
iTunes is not free
I have never used any microsoft products
Every version of windows has been solid as a rock and windows 8 has had total global domination
PC's do not dominate the global business environment
Mac's are brilliant in a large network environment and hardware upgrades are very very easy
The Mac's finder shits all over windows explorer and the Mac's mail programme kills Microsoft Live Mail
PC's are much better for the home and small office environment including use by creative companies
PC's are easier to use and are 99% safer online than the Mac
The iPod did not revolutionise the music industry
The iPad did not revolutionise the hand held tablet industry
I hate my iPad and it is brilliant for business
The iPad has no file manipulation limitations and sharing photos and video is a breeze
My iPad it totally shit around my house and will not run my media to my TV's and stereos
Skype is much better than Facetime
I will go back to using my windows machine because of my Macs of the Macs many many shortfalls
A PC tower looks much more stylish than an iMac 27 including the all the leads that have to come out of the back
My iMac locks up on me all the time and I get the blue screen of death all the time
My Dell has never crashed or locked up on me
Macs never gets frustrating, a windows machine is more frustrating
The next version of Windows is going to be a total dog and won't be called Windows 9
Windows 8 is the bees knees and brilliant to use
I don't run windows on my Mac because I have no programmes that I want to run
If I did run windows on my Mac it would run extremely slowly and it locks up all the time
Windows 8 is fantastic to use

So come on Stoo what version of my post would you like to use the first which is total bullshit according to you, or would you like to use the opposing post above which I assume you think is pretty good because it is the opposite of the original.

Your choice.

Remember Apple is primarily a hardware company not a software company. Take a look at the bullshit video codec industry, for fucks sake there are hundreds and hundred of fucking video formats its a fucking joke, Microsoft are to blame for this by letting vendor go off and do their own thing, they should have controlled the video card manufacturers. Now we have the shit fight of video codec that confuses even hardened IT people. Audio is not so bad.

Tell me that there has been no collusion between software developers and hardware developers over the decades. For fucks sake game and software developers were designing games and programmes that would only run on higher and higher video graphics forcing hardware upgrades.

Apple have announce its new operating system called Yosemite, unlike Windows 9 Yosemite will be free.

Price speculation is always a good thing, I'm using 8.1 which handily enough came free. How backward compatible will Yosemite be and how many people will not be able to upgrade and instead will have to shell out 2K plus for something that will run it?

Apple is not a hardware company, it's an image company that sells stuff that's cobbled together from parts supplied by different manufacturers, it doesn't make, it assembles.

I'm typing this on an Asus, my tablet is a Nexus (built by Asus), my phone is a Nokia and my spare laptop is a Lenovo. Guess what, they all actually make their own hardware.

Well 8.1 was a free upgrade but windows 8 was not free. Yosemite is a new operating system not an upgrade, you know like going from Windows 7 to Windows 8 (which is not free). Windows 8.1 was hurried out the door because of the global condemnation of the lack the start button (among other things).

By the way Yosemite will support all Mac's built after the mid 2007's.

Yes Stoo I'm a bit of an old bloke but please don't be fooled by this. I've been there done that with computers over the years, striped them down rebuilt them, upgraded them (last upgrade was a month ago, a new ethernet card) I've installed and reinstalled countless programmes and Windows operating systems of all the varieties, not just for myself but for family and friends as I'm the go to IT guru in our circle.

Most people Stoo (and I'm not one of them) they just want to sit down turn on their computer and rightly expect it to work, they are not interested in what's under the bonnet so to speak. I am and always have been a tinkerer when it comes to computers, I want to know how and why they work, so you are totally wrong with your statement that I prefer form over function. Funny enough it was the function bit that got me interested in buying the Mac, I do a lot of video editing (amateur only) and when I started using Final Cut Pro on a friends Mac it totally blew me away, it is miles better than anything that Windows based machines have including Adobe's Premier Pro.

I did not know how I would get on with the Mac as it is a lot different to Windows, it took a lot of time reading and looking at video tutorials but once I got the hang of it Bob's your uncle. If you have built computers Stoo you will know that you can get a feel for how well a computer is built, a clone backyard PC sold in a retail outlet just does not have the same feeling as say a Dell or HP etc, they look and feel "tinny". That is the same feeling I get when comparing my Mac to my Dell PC, the Mac is much better designed and much better built. You also appreciate that one issue with Macs is that to all intense and purposes you are stuck with what you get especially when it comes to video graphics and audio cards. Macs for instance are not built to play games on, some PC's.

Now go through my earlier post and tell me what is bullshit about it. You may know enough about computers to buy compatible peripherals etc, but Stoo the overwhelming computer users do not. Although Linux has got a lot better over the years it is still an OS for geeks and not something the average home user can get their heads around.

You obviously know nothing about Linux ... you are way behind the times.
Linux mint runs straight out the box.
Nothing to learn.
Download an iso for Mint 17 bung it on a disc and run it from your dvd slot without installing to the hard drive to get a feel of it and then tell me what you had to learn .... what you couldn't get your head around and if you can do that you'll be proving you know nothing whatsoever about computing.

Yes I'm way behind the times Roll, tell me again how do you install MS Office onto a Linux machine, I assume you know all about MS Office it's the one used by nearly everyone on the planet. What was that you said install OpenOffice, OpenOffice is fucking shit by comparison. Use the Linux terminal commands, tell that to Mr and Mrs Joe Bloggs. Need to make a back up to DVD, fuck go and install a DVD burning programme that didn't come out of the fucking box.

Linux may very well be a good operating system, much much more secure than windows will ever be (just like a Mac because of the system architecture) but it is not for the average user, I stand by my statement you have to be a geek to use Linux, let me add a little rider to that though, someone could get by using linux but they would need a geek handy to install and maintain the programme.

Take me through the steps Roll, I'm just someone that wants to turn on a computer and start using it. I have a Dell (could be an HP) machine running windows, now tell me how to install Linux on it, I'll then take you through a windows install let's see what is the easiest. Remember first of all you have to get your hands on linux or know how to get hold of it.

By the way if I want to install a new programme I don't really (nor mr & mrs average) want to fuck about typing terminal commands and go and search for drivers etc separately.

Remember first of all you have to get your hands on linux or know how to get hold of it.[/quote]

Download a prog ... click install it installs.
Open office is fantastic now and probably superior to Microsofts offering.
No command line unless you want to use it.
Uninstall a prog ... right click uninstall and it's gone.
DVD etc all comes complete ... watching copying etc.
There is now no learning curve on Mint 17 that is fully supported till 2019.
Update comes take it or leave it it.
Want to take it?
Put a tick in a box press download installs itself.
Mint 17 has been hailed by all the pc mags and more not just as the best Linux ever but the best operating system ever and even mywife uses it and that's telling you how simple it is.
There is no maintaining of the programmes at all.
They auto update these days.
Theres no defragging no nothing ... it just is and just does.
Download an iso Keith and bung it on a disc ... you don't even need to install it to see what it can and cant do.
Run it from your
dvd
tray ... the whole operating system ... send and recieve emails come on here copy and paste etc ... without even installing it.
I'm running on it now and I'd bet money I'm running faster and more secure than you lot.
The space station and various militaries around the world run on it for many reasons.
The downside?
Crap if you're into serious gaming simply because few games are made for it.

and wtf is microsoft tax????
and what "issues" windows has been solid ever since XP
hell even ME was kool if you knew how to mange services and startups
windows 95 was the last microsoft product that was really crap with "issues"
i wouldnt have an apple product in the house
if i was given one id sell it to a macfag and buy samsung
or microsoft anyone who uses itunes is a fucking moron
paying apple for what is free everywhere else
music i own legally even cant be put on an apple product
its just fucking asinine, under performing over priced over regulated
and over hyped magfags are like moonies they are brainwashed by hype
and thinking coz they own apple they are kool
when actually there back of the computer short bus
oh and as for apple being kool....pmsl
they stole all there visual ideas from braun
fuck apple
:shoot:

Microsoft tax? You purchase some software, your choice.

The rest of your post is just a bit strange :ooer:

Total Bullshit was the term you used, so first or second version your choice.

The Microsoft Tax: You cannot by a brand name PC computer without buying windows, yes some counties you can get a refund from Microsoft if you can prove you are no longer going to use the OS. Just google it Stoo.

I'm no expert - my computer dick is average size - but here's my computer history:

The first PC-like computer I encountered was an early Tandy (possibly a TRS 80) around 1980 - it belonged to a friend and we played Hamurabi programmed manually in Basic.

My first personal computer was a ZX81 followed by 2 Spectrums.
Then an Atari ST.
Then an Amiga - my all time favourite.

My first PC ran at 66 MHz - OS Windows 3.1 - comms: Delphi as a gateway to Telenet etc.
I've used every Windows iteration since on a variety of ever more powerful machines - the best of these was a stripped out version of XP and Windows 7/8/8.1 - none were completely stable.

I've also used Linux - distros Ubuntu and Red Hat - not for long though, not because I didn't like them but because the range of applications was too narrow for my needs at that time.

I've also owned iMacs running Tiger through to my current system running Mavericks - generally these have proved to be more stable than Windows but it's a close run thing with Win 8.1 which is also slicker imv.

If all this means anything it is how daft this argument is - worthy of 17 year old fanboys rather than grown men. That said, if I was forced to choose a side I would vote with Keith.

Yes you can, I provided helpful links to big box UK offers. You can run any os on pretty much any PC except for ios stuff, anything actually useful has to be run through Bootcamp and a Windows emulator in any case, still at least your Youtube vids show your wrinkles :gigglesnshit:

It is not a bigger dick waving contest Az so you're ok.
It's a simple agument about whats good whats not.
I've stated the downside of Linux.
I too went through many linux trials and always went back to Windows but not for about two years now.
I have Windows 7 but I won't be going any further.

In which case (and the point of my post) all OS's have their strengths and weaknesses. My favourite being AmigaOS back in the day, followed by OSX, Linux distros (not that there's much difference tbh), then Windows. I forget to mention IBM OS/2 which I tried for a while but can't remember much about it except that it looked nice.

I thought I gave a balanced opinion pro's and con's of my Mac experience next thing I'm labelled an Apple nazi and I prefer style over function etc., nothing is further from the truth. I have used Microsoft computers from the days of DOS through to the present day windows, I purchased a Mac and I stated that I much prefer it and would never go back to a windows machine.

If you are saying that you can't run iOS stuff on a PC then think again Stoo because you can http://www.lifehacker.com.au/2012/08/how-to-run-mac-os-x-on-any-windows-pc-using-virtualbox/ just who has been mugged.

In the end it comes down to personal choice, however there are some considerations to be made, first is horses for courses, would you network a hundred Mac's for large business use, no (but you could) and I said this. Would you use PC for graphic design or editing, not if you had any sense although you could. Bearing in mind that the first line of system defence is the user for home use the Mac is a much more secure and stable platform over a Windows PC, if you want to strip down, take apart, add bits, take away bits then a Mac is not for you.

I'm over all the stripping down stuff, been there done that, I've been through the phase of installing dozens of new programmes (I once had 10 different programmes for picture editing and about the same for ripping audio), I just don't feel the need to do it anymore, I know (well enough to be dangerous) how and why computers work now. At the end of the day (apart from specialised programmes) a computer is just an electronic version of a filing cabinet, the cabinet is the computer case, the drawers are the drives, the dividers are the folders and inside the dividers are the files. If organised correctly it is very easy to lay your hands on a file in both cases (OK the computer can hone in a lot quicker and search through the file itself).

There are a lot of Windows users that look at Mac users with distain and this is unfair, that said there are a lot of Mac users that are pretentious (like westerners that try to eat Chinese food with chopsticks), and yes (as per my OP) a lot of stupid "I want to be the first to own an iPhone6" cunts, which was the point of the thread.

you still have not said why my post was total bullshit by the way, do you want to use the first version or the second version, your choice but I do understand it's a Catch 22 for you, damned if you do damned if you don't. Still waiting.

LOL, mind you Roll, it should not be an issue for the overwhelming majority of computer users. Millions of people use MS Word to type a letter to their Aunt Doris etc when any text editor will do, Word is complete overkill. Most admin staff use less than 10% of MS Office's capability.
