Yes, knots will choke gulls and starve fish and they are littered on the North Devon and Cornwall shores. Dogs will often eat them as well.

If a boat at sea loses gear accidentally and cannot retrieve it could be at the bottom of the ocean with dead saline attached to it.
Fishermen do not wanna lose their expensive gear, those who dump stuff are very norty.

London still dumps raw sewage into the sea.

Knots are cut off and discarded into the sea, it's a common practice. Raw sewage while disguising is biodegradable within days unlike lumps of plastic rope.

Use hemp again at least.

Most of the ripe I see around inland is the blue stuff I think is polypropylene which phone company use for pulling cables underground.
