compulsory Work

Can anyone tell me if it was it was compulsory to work in the coal mines in the mid 1900s, if you were a school leaver ,and was there other compulsory work , around nation service time , friend told me his dad was force to work in a coal mine for a year , don’t know if he having me on

There was the Bevin Boy scheme during WWII where young men were conscripted to work in coal mines. Don't know of anything before that.
