I didn't know that (improvement over time) but I've now had a chance to test them out on music from house to grime to classical and streaming from an iPhone, Mac and Amazon Echo Dot and they have handled everything very well. And they look brilliant as well!

I'd be interested to hear how you get on with the DAB radio.

I'll keep you updated, the R1 should be here Thursday or Friday. As I've said I was thinking about the R2, but £420 just to get stereo speakers and to sit on my bedside cabinet is overkill for me. And besides most dab radios that have stereo speakers usually have the speakers set too close together which will largely negate the stereo sound anyway. The R1 is suppose to have cracking sound out of a mono speaker.

I've owned quite a few things from the more obscure specialist makes but never owned any Ruark stuff so it should be fun.

Yeah speakers do have a break-in period it varies quite wildly due to the size of the speakers etc Sometimes the instruction manual even mentions it. But essentially the speaker driver will be a bit stiff at first, after some hours of use the bass performance improving slightly is usually the thing people notice the most.

Yeah, I agree that £420 is excessive for what you intend to use it for and from what I can gather you can also get a battery pack to add some portability to the R1 as well. The styling is great and the control wheel at the top seems well thought out (it's amazing that some manufacturers seem to overlook doing fundamental things like that well.)

The less said about me and instruction manuals the better though...

Yep battery pack is available, but £50 isn't it, can't quite remember just now. A price obviously has to be paid though when you're dealing with specialist companies. Ruark is a smallish company and British.

lol And manuals they usually are pretty shitty these days and most of the product info is usually online anyway, online manuals are usually more extensive.

Had a bit of a play with the R1 and the sound quality from a mono speaker is outstanding, the sound fills an average size bedroom quite easily. The depth of sound from such a small box is very impressive. It sought out all the DAB stations in flash automatically doing so when you first switch it on. The clock is very clear even those with failing/blurring morning eyes won't have problem. Haven't tried out the bluetooth yet.

Oh and build quality is very good, but you'll know that no doubt the MR1s are just the same.

Outstanding.

And yes, the build quality and finish are excellent. I like giving the wood casing a little knock to hear the satisfying sound it makes.

Thanks for setting up this thread as it has been very beneficial!

No worries. A techy thread is a usually quite popular on basically any type of forum.

Knock on wood. Maybe something for a music thread at some point.

Whoa. Those are expensive.

Do you think they are worth the money though for a home set-up even if a person could afford them? Sometimes I wonder if things like this are more status symbol than anything else. There must be diminishing utility on a huge scale once you get passed a certain level to the benefit say a £10,000 system has over a £1,000 one given the capability of the human ear.

lol Krell yeah not cheap, I think they're mainly for people like Becks and Richard Branson. Martin Logan not quite so bad they do hit under £1000 on occasion, just. And nice one flagging up trusted reviews, it's a good site.
