Poems-U-Like

I'll stick one of these on, once-a-week, even if no-one else is interested.

Here's one by Ian Hamilton, about suddenly finding yourself old:

Who turned the page? When I went out
Last night, his Life was left wide-open,
Half-way through, in lamplight on my desk:
The Middle years.
Now look at him. Who turned the page?

I'm fond of The Ancient Mariner but it's a bit too long to post in full. We used to have to memorise a poem for the first English lesson after a school holiday, I always did Milligan, my favourite:

I must go down to the sea again,

To the lonely sea and sky.

I left my pants and socks there,

I wonder if they're dry?

Yes, I think we're kind of restricted to shorter poems on forums, though it's no problem really. I had a similar thread on another board years ago and someone posted Shakespeare's Venus and Adonis in a sort of protest, which went on for about eight pages.

I know one of Spike Milligan's favourite poets was The World's Worst Poet, William McGonagall:

The chicken is a noble beast,
The cow is much forlorner:
Standing in the pouring rain
With a leg at every corner.

A boy stood on the burning deck
picking his nose like mad
he rolled it into little balls
and flicked it at his dad

A boy stood on the burning deck playing a game of cricket.

The ball ran up his trouser leg and stumped his middle wicket! :yikes:

Love poetry, the good ones hit you hard and softly at the same time.
It reminds you that you’re not the only one that’s gone through those feelings and it reminds you to feel.

Perhaps you would have liked some of mine. I used to post it on other forums but those arseholes you speak of used to put it down and say how bad it was, so I stopped posting them. You might have seen one or two at Micky's place.

No, sorry I didn’t see them. I went through a phase where I couldn’t read any poetry for reasons...
I wouldn’t put it on here Abs unless you’re ready for some arsehole to take the piss.

Oh I know, just like the others at the other forums. I know my poetry is good. I have several published. But no matter how good they may be, those arseholes will try to say otherwise just to get to me.

Well you’ve got the last laugh Abs because they live under a bridge without a working boiler.
Sod them.

I should write some poetry some day. :artist:

You should, have you written before? Other than the few poems I wrote about my son and dads passing, I haven't written in ages. I have so much stuff in me and start jotting stuff down, but then never go back to finish them. It's also therapeutic.
