A lot of short journeys were cut

Would you prefer some to come back

A fair few lines in Devon were closed that would be economical to run now if they still existed intact. The trouble is the reinstatement costs.

Examples.
The line to Bude.
The line to Padstow.
The lines from Barnstaple to Bideford and Ilfracombe.
The line from South Brent to Kingsbridge.

But, most importantly the line between Okehampton and Tavistock/Bere Alston.

He is.

You have to remember that the invention of the railway revolutionized the world more so than any other invention at the time (Industrial Revolution). Engineers like Isambard Kingdom Brunel and George Stephenson were pioneers of their time.

Your description of the interior décor of the train sounded boring but in the vid it looks so classy, elegant and sophisticated. Very French, Mr Dunn. :wubbers:
Evokes memories of a certain movie genre especially the whodunnit ones of Inspector Clouseau, Hercule Poirot, Miss Marple & co.

Oh and "zero zero sept" would have sounded sexy too.

I'm sure all lines don't have to be connected up to the main network.
This is one of North Wales heritage lines ad there are a few of them.
This one is about ten miles long from Llangollen to Corwen and had a huge train yard full of steamers and diesels.
The locals get special concessionary tickets and they use the train to go shopping and visiting and the docs etc.
These lines are not connected to the main network but carry a lot of stock and run pretty well.

Almost all of these (heritage) lines were originally connected to the main network, it's just that for most of them only parts of the original lines have been re-instated.

Buxton to Matlock for example.

The point being is isolated mainline railways have limited usefulness in terms of connectivity, i.e. you can't run through services which many train passengers find more useful than journey times. If a train service goes from A to B without needing one or more changes, people will normally opt for the direct service.

I could travel from Luton - London St.Pancras - London Underground - London Waterloo - Exeter - Totnes (which requires 3 changes of train) or I could go to London. St. Pancras - London Underground - London Paddington - Totnes (which requires 2 changes of train). The latter is usually more convenient and quicker, but usually more expensive.

Alternatively, I can go from London Paddington to Totnes via Bristol Parkway or Bristol Temple Meads according to the ATOC (now Rail Delivery Group) routing guide if I have the correct ticket, which I do sometimes.

Lots of new changes happening in the next 1-4 years regarding TOCs.

I'm looking forward to the introduction of 33x5 class 810 trains on the Midland Main Line, which will allow the class 222's to be cascaded, and in the meantime class 222 train sets can be lengthened by the introduction of a fleet of class 360 sets operating between Corby and St. Pancras International, increasing the number of trains per hour from LUT to STP from 7-8.
