Norwood church paedophile jailed for nine years

A paedophile who abused his position of trust in churches and a youth project to sexually abuse young girls over two decades has been jailed for nine years.

Judge Nicholas Philpott said married dad Jason Hoyte, 38, "exploited church attendance" in churches in West Norwood, Upper Norwood and Brixton "to worm his way in to the affection and homes of decent families" and his action had "far-reaching effects" on his victims.

Victim impact statements read to Inner London Crown court at Hoyte's sentencing on Tuesday told how some of the girls he abused when he was in his late teens were "still very suspicious of men" and one "felt awkward showing love" to her two children as a result of the abuse.

A statement from the mother of a 13-year-old girl who Hoyte groomed while a youth worker in West Norwood and carried out a penetrative sexual attack on in 2005, said her daughter had gone from being a "outgoing, bubbly, friendly personality" to now "being unsure and unstable".

Judge Philpott said a pre-sentence report showed Hoyte was "in denial completely" about what he had done.

Hoyte was found guilty at Inner London Crown Court on November 9 of 14 counts of indecent assault, and two of sexual assault with a child.

The indecent assaults took place from 1987 to the early 1990s when Hoyte was a teenager. His victims were children no older than eight who he would grope and rub to give himself sexual pleasure.

After a 13-year period he then carried out a series of sexual assaults on young teenage girls he had met through a Brixton church and then groomed through his position as director of a youth project.

Judge Philpott told Hoyte: "You had a go at two teenagers you had been grooming. You achieved sexual intercourse with one and it seems you were interrupted in an attempt with another."

Sonia Woodley QC defending, said Hoyte had committed the first offences when he was "somewhat immature" and had involuntary erections. She admitted all the attacks were "a breach of trust”.

Hoyte was also banned indefinitely on working with children, and handed an indefinite sexual offences prevention order banning him from contact with children aged 16 and under.
