History repeats itself

In the last week of June, 1863, all the London daily papers published a paragraph with the “sensational” heading, “Death from simple over-work.” It dealt with the death of the milliner, Mary Anne Walkley, 20 years of age, employed in a highly-respectable dressmaking establishment, exploited by a lady with the pleasant name of Elise. The old, often-told story, [56] was once more recounted. This girl worked, on an average, 16½ hours, during the season often 30 hours, without a break, whilst her failing labour-power was revived by occasional supplies of sherry, port, or coffee. It was just now the height of the season. It was necessary to conjure up in the twinkling of an eye the gorgeous dresses for the noble ladies bidden to the ball in honour of the newly-imported Princess of Wales. Mary Anne Walkley had worked without intermission for 26½ hours, with 60 other girls, 30 in one room, that only afforded 1/3 of the cubic feet of air required for them. At night, they slept in pairs in one of the stifling holes into which the bedroom was divided by partitions of board. [57] And this was one of the best millinery establishments in London. Mary Anne Walkley fell ill on the Friday, died on Sunday, without, to the astonishment of Madame Elise, having previously completed the work in hand. The doctor, Mr. Keys, called too late to the death-bed, duly bore witness before the coroner’s jury that

“Mary Anne Walkley had died from long hours of work in an over-crowded work-room, and a too small and badly ventilated bedroom.”

In America drug rehab means working in a industrial meat processing camp for no pay

Perhaps no rehab better exemplifies this allegiance to big business than CAAIR. It was started in 2007 by chicken company executives struggling to find workers. By forming a Christian rehab, they could supply plants with a cheap and captive labor force while helping men overcome their addictions.

At CAAIR, about 200 men live on a sprawling, grassy compound in northeastern Oklahoma, and most work full time at Simmons Foods Inc., a company with annual revenue of $1.4 billion. They slaughter and process chickens for some of America’s largest retailers and restaurants, including Walmart, KFC and Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen. They also make pet food for PetSmart and Rachael Ray’s Nutrish brand.

This thread should please many of the contributors to Dogs - it's exactly what the EU has planned for 80% of it's population.

Go look at Sports Direct 800,000 sq ft. warehouse complex at Shirebrook or the new Amazon 'fulfilment' centre in Tilbury for prime examples.

Don't know much about Shirebrook apart from it being known locally as the 'Gulag' and was being staffed almost exclusively by Poles on zero hour contracts at minimum wage, working under oppressive and humiliating conditions at the mercy of abusive lower and middle management.

I know even less about Amazon's new Tilbury distribution centre, opened earlier this year.

No doubt it is being run on a similar basis to SD. Local propaganda and radio advertising says it's created 1500 new jobs for the area and for 'Londoners' reality tells you that at £7.65ph rising to a life changing £8.15ph after two years, it gives plenty of scope for British workers to work themselves to death on overtime trying to earn enough to live and raise a family in Britain.

Of course that won't happen because it will be staffed by some of the EU's massive and growing army of transient workers who don't have to live here permanently, for them it's a dream come true.

Welcome to the remainers and europhiles vision of a strong UK in thrall to a European Union largely based on ancient Romes philosophy of Pax Romana "We give you peace in return for blind obedience and a slave workforce"

And people are still whinging and whining about wanting to be a part of that. :shake head:

Do you really think it would be any different under him? - Blair and Brown, and no matter what you say they still campaigned under a Labour banner, had plenty of time to rectify matters - they didn't, why?

It's because the political elite of not just this country but the whole of Europe see it as the natural progression of a United Europe, a huge slave workforce, working for the betterment of a middle class elite who are in turn enthralled to an all powerful ruling elite based in Brussels.

No matter what banner they insist they fight under, they will be powerless and thats the way they want it, the EU will be their excuse for not doing anything.

Local and minor matters will still be under their control but thats where it stops in the federated EU. Anything else, anything major that affects the lives of millions will come from the dictators in Brussels.

BTW you won't be able to tell them you are displeased at the way they are handling things and threaten them with replacement, they are immovable and when they call it a day, their replacements will be ones of their choosing not yours.

I doubt Corbyn will be allowed into office anyway ... there's an accident coming or cancer.
The problem with Corbyn is he is genuine so if he sells out it'll be noticeable instantly .... that's the difference with this guy.
Plus the world of high finance will destroy him anyway as they always do when anyone anywhere sets up a socialist system.
Why it doesn't work.

Lets face it as well everything will have been destroyed by the time there is an election.
No NHS to save and the cost could never be met now because the capital will be withheld.
The country has doubled it's debt and its credit rating is falling apart so no money for anything.
What the Tories have done to this country is make us worse than Greece.
The reality of America is that too is worse than Greece but papered over for a little while.
All through greed and mismanagement.
Germany is looking east and is on the verge of ditching the dollar.
America is screwed and we're committing suicide by walking away from the only real market place in town.
Europe are refusing to keep backing sanctions here there and everywhere that hurt them more than they hurt America and more than they hurt those sanctioned because nations have discovered that no .... we don't have to suffer like this we just ditch the dollar and the sanctions don't work.
America and Britain have put the rope around their own necks.

Its also whats planned for us after brexit - the Tories/UKIP crowd have made no secret that they will scrap any and all rules and regulations that hold back the business class from unleashing itself upon us (workers rights? bye-bye).

Dont forget we have to make ourselves 'competitive' and attract international businesses like Amazon. This means bending us over, lubing us up and preparing for the inevitable.

Taking back control :ooer:

This is happening all round the world not just EU and its part of the functioning of capitalism

Because they were wedded to the same neo-liberal politics of Thatcher and the rest.

Corbyn meanwhile was condemned to a lifetime on the back benches precisely because he refused to sell out his belief. Him, McDonnell and Abbott were targeted by the blairites because they kept rebelling against the policies of Blair and his cronies.

While I am no fan of Corbyn's politics - he's a social-democrat and a pretty milquetoast one at that - I dont doubt his sincerity in what he wants to do. Whether he can do it will depend on how much the British public want it as well, and make it impossible to not do. Which is why the movement behind him isnt just focused on parliament but also building activitist groups around the country.

Change comes when the people in power realise that not doing what we want is more damaging that doing it.

The rise in popularity of what Corbyn represents is already affecting government. The Tories knew that it couldn't be ignored for long, they tried demonising a very reasonable man, the demonising didn't work at the last election. They have to pay attention. The people are winning.
