Wow.

I had never thought of that before :kinell:

When my grandson could walk for more than 2 minutes before falling over, I often took him to a little park around the corner from where he lived. It was a proper old school park with all the apparatus you'd expect to find in a municipal playground of the 60's and 70's. Hardly anyone used it, we were often the only ones there which was nice actually.

Anyway, it seemed that any time I didn't have my eyes glued on him he'd have his mouth wrapped around any piece of metal he could find, railings, swing chains, see-saw handles, you name it, it had been in his mouth - often licking and sucking with great satisfaction.

Of course I stopped him each time, not that it made much difference because he'd be at it again as soon as he got the opportunity. If my daughter had known she would have gone ballsitic and I'd probably never be able to take him out on my own again, so I never told her.

He's nearly 6 now and fit as a butcher's dog and (touch wood) has never had an illness save for the odd cold. Like I said before, kids need to have contact with everything this world can throw at us, otherwise they are at a great disadvantage in the survival stakes.

I completely agree, my kids always slept with our dogs...they would lick their faces and even ate out of their mouth when I "wasn't" looking...like you, of course I would try to stop it, but I couldn't watch every second and tbh, I wasn't too worried..they also played in the dirt outside, had the dogs jump in the bath with them, helped me pick up doggie poo etc...you get the picture, right?...Neither of my kids have any allergies and hardly ever get sick, apart from the usual cold they bring home from school...I definitely didn't prepare every bottle from fresh when they were babies...who had the time to do that??? It's no wonder children today pick up every single shit that's floating around, nor is it any wonder so many children suffer allergies...they have no stable immune system....The worse would have to be the disinfectants...Don't get me wrong, I also disinfect places like toilets and kitchen on the odd occasion when cleaning, but I don't go over board. So many people carry antibacterial lotions around and wipe everything they come in touch with  ...they are the ones who have a cold most of the year

Absolutely, but today's generation is the slave of advertisers, especially when it comes to hygiene and their kids.

We have what I think is the most distasteful and misleading advert over here, quite honestly it should be banned for it's misrepresentation and for causing unnecessary anguish to gullible parents.

I think it might be 'Dettol' though I'm not sure, anyway it starts with a couple of kids running into a large kitchen where the mother is diligently wiping over all the work-surfaces and appliances with a leg of raw chicken.

The obvious shock value and ridiculous premise should be enough alone to get it banned, I wonder where the 'progressive liberal types' are when you really need them?

Something else I have done for as long as I can remember, presumably learning it from my parents is to always allow cooked food to cool before refrigerating or freezing for later consumption.

Apparently that is a big no no now, you should refrigerate or freeze everything as soon as you stop cooking, in case bacteria attaches themselves to the food whilst exposed to the air without heat.

I have never suffered any ill effects from doing what I've always done as far as I'm aware, I always work on the premise that in general as long as you reheat foodstuffs only once and they are cooked through and piping hot when you eat them, there is nothing wrong with cooling first before refrigerating - I rarely freeze leftovers but I have done so.

I always let food cool down before I put it in the freezer or fridge...warm food put in the fridge or freezer will alter the temperature which in itself isn't very good for the rest of the food in there ...anyway, food kept out to cool for up to an hour and with a lid on, is perfectly safe, been doing it for ever that way and will continue doing so... I have never, ever given my family food poisoning.Go with what you know works and ignore all those idiotic new good for nothing advice.

Because your floor hasnt been covered in milk. Milk causes rapid bacterial growth which is why baby bottles are best sterilised to counter-act any left over residue.

No apologies necessary, though a breakdown of causes is always helpful.

So, going from the lowest mortality rates in the examples given in 1970, the UK had risen to second highest by 2010, thats progress for you.

What more than here? fuck thats a leap of imagination. :kinell:

Maybe it's because so much advice is given which contradicts previous advice or it's just the avalanche of advice people are overwhelmed with, that they don't know which way to turn. :dunno:

I am of the firm opinion that much of this advice is 'change for changes sake' that people earn good money for doing it and to justify their existence. You see, in your 'modern world' anything older than 5 years is seen to be antiquated and ripe for re-adjustment whether it needs it or not.

Nah, 30 years of thatcherism had seen us fall behind those european countries that didnt buy into the bullshit.

The countries that scored the best - as usual - were the Scandinavian ones. Y'know the ultra-left-liberal-socialist hellscapes (according to the right wingers)

You missed out the most pertinent reason of course, tiny and easily managable populations coupled with high government income, so I fixed it for you.

The old adage 'If it ain't broke, don't fix it' is anathema to today's progressive 'modern world' thinkers.

Apart from the fact that it is an 'old adage' and therefore ripe for debunking regardless of it's absolute logic, they hate it because it's not conducive to the well being of an industry consisting of elite 'experts' who make a very good living out of turning our traditional thinking upside down, for no apparent good reason.

I am quite sure that to justify their existence, they pluck something out of the air that has worked well for generations, tweak and twist it around a bit and if it proves to cause as little damage as the thing they want to change, they then present it as the new gospel, the new benchmark for all to adhere to.

Of course that will only last as long as it takes the next one on the elite expert's conveyor belt to change it. :shake head:

Have a look at the Yanks ....
According to the most recent National Vital Statistics Report, more than 26,000 American babies born alive in 2009 died before their first birthday, which gives the U.S. a very high infant mortality rate of six infant deaths per 1,000 live births. In 1960, America ranked 12th in infant mortality among all nations of the world. In 2005, we had fallen to number 30. Today in America, there are more premature babies than ever before and more full term babies die before their first birthday than in most European countries.

The most recent study (2011) looking and infant mortality and vaccination is perhaps the most disturbing. It finds that developed nations with the poorest infant mortality rates, like the U.S., tend to give their infants more vaccine doses before age one. To put this into perspective, doctors give American babies 26 vaccine doses before age one, which is twice as many vaccinations as are given babies in Sweden and Japan. Is it really just a "coincidence" that the infant mortality rate is twice as high in America as it is in Sweden and Japan?

the not sleeping on the front and swaddling thing is right though, tj, far fewer cot deaths now that has changed.

For me the jury is out on cot deaths, I think central heating is a major factor.

I'm with you on the hygiene front though, yes it's fine with new borns but later on it's ridiculous. How the hell are kids going too build up restistance against a myriad of germs and such, if they are prevented from coming into contact with them?

My daughter is the opposite.
Very clean house sterilized bottles for three months and thats it.
She has three very bright fit healthy children youngest seven months old.
Will not join in the mass vaccination programmes forced upon children these days.
Seven month old just got over hooping cough.
All three of them had it as babies all three of them now have immunity for life where as the vaccinated kids don't and now never can.
The vaccines start to wear off then you need boosters for the rest of your life which no one sticks to.
It is scientifically impossible to say at what point a vaccine has worn off to now be leaving the child open to all those diseases it was vaccinated for so the booster injections are best guess.
She is adamant about it and well educated about it all.
Her children do not have compromised immune systems like the others who will have to keep having shots.
Her kids play in the mud play in the woods by their house climb trees get cut bruised etc.
Old fashioned I know but her kids are growing up just like I did.
Only ailment I ever had as a kid was tonsillitis.

Just edited it before I get jumped on for spelling like my mate Markey.

You missed whooping cough markey
