Shoeing A Horse

Shoeing A Horse

Postby Major » Sat Nov 04, 2017 8:56 pm

I used to watch a farrier or my old man shoe a horse when I was young, they would let me, under strict supervision do a bit of rasping/knocking in nails, I was fascinated.

The first consideration is the safety, comfort of the horse.

I went to my mates today to see about shooting, he had the farrier there, guess what, I asked if I could have a go, he agreed and it brought back memories, I rasped off flat, shaped the hoof ok but the clipping was not quite good enough, I set one shoe and after he adjusted it I knocked in 6 nails no damage done, I enjoyed it but you do get back ache.

Interesting

Only Markey really, abandoning the thread sort of stops any discussion if the OP is going to bugger off.

I can drag it on a bit for self promotion and boredom if you like but it would be a repost of my experiences of fucking up when driving offroad.

Just looked it up , not keen on this one :bawlin:

To Protect the Hoof From Ammonia

Horses are sometimes kept stabled for 12 to 22 hours a day, standing in a stall that is usually cleaned only once a day. This exposes the hoof to ammonia. In the past this was one of the main reasons behind the development of the shoe, and is still one of the reasons why they are so important on horses that are kept stabled for any length of time. The shoe lifts the hoof up off the manure and urine just enough to make a differenc
