Theresa May should apologise to ex-colonies - Thornberry
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-43751518

"Shadow Foreign Secretary Emily Thornberry said the PM should correct "historic mistakes" in the run up to next month's Commonwealth summit.
She said a 2006 apology by David Cameron for the Tory government's refusal to impose sanctions on South Africa over apartheid was not enough.
The PM should also right the "historic wrong" of the Chagos Islands, she said."

In general, I'm in favour of apologies in an attempt to heal open wounds that have resulted in injustices, but how far back should we go?
I have been a strong supporter of apologies to the stolen generations for example, and also to those British kids who were taken into care in Australia - one of whom was a close friend

Should the UK apologise to all ex-colonies?
Should Gordon Brown apologise for the financial crash?
Should the Romans apologise for invading us?

And if the wrongs are acknowledged - what about compensation?
This is where the Australian Governments attempts at reconciliation with the Aborigines keeps stalling.

What are your views?

If harm has been done and that has been acknowledged and accepted, what harm can it do to apologise?

Absolutely should.

All the people saying no, I assume the Germans also shouldn't apologise for their Nazi past?

That was done 10 years ago

"German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s Knesset address on March 18 was, I believe, the most significant speech made by any German leader since World War ii. In speaking about the German atrocities committed against the Jews during the war, she made a statement that some people have been waiting to hear for over 60 years. In an apology to her Israeli audience, Merkel said, “The mass murder of 6 million Jews, carried out in the name of Germany, has brought indescribable suffering to the Jewish people, Europe and the entire world.” She said Germans were “filled with shame” over the Nazi Holocaust."

I'd rather have the money.

Isn't that what some people fear will flow from an apology of this sort? It then leads to claims of reparations?

Apologies are meaningless when they are not given by those who did wrong.

Why would Brown apologise for a crash that started in USA?
Why do blue neoliberals keep moaning about red neoliberals who followed blue neoliberal policies?
Did you want to have Socialist intervention in the financial markets?

"Should Gordon Brown apologise for the financial crash?"

Why ?

He didn't cause it, as you know full well.

As your posts become more removed from reality on a daily basis, I am becoming highly suspicious that you are simply a lowly troll with no real interest in facts.

Just posting to get a reaction. Well, that's my last bite. Enjoy.
