Happy to. In my experience, whenever you criticize the police you get called "anti police" or they accuse you of having an "agenda". It's like they think that they are above criticism from the public (although curiously they are happy to listen to criticism from fellow officers) so if anyone criticizes, it must be because of an agenda rather than a legitimate criticism. It's stifling public-police relations because people are being made to feel like we aren't allowed to criticize the police, or that if we are critical of one specific case, we are critical of the police as a whole. I don't see why members of the public shouldn't be allowed to give their informed criticism when coppers are happy to take criticism from colleagues.

I’ve never made an official complaint about them or anything like that. What I refer to is how I got on well with some of the local coppers, chatted, always a friendly smile, they’d stop for a wee gab in your shop when they were in buying their lunch. Then I criticized something, a case in the news where I felt the officer used excessive force. I said this and all of a sudden the attitude changed. Those coppers still came into my shop, but there was no friendly chat anymore.Strictly business, grab their food, pay, and go. Whenever we saw each other in the street, what used to be a cheerful hello and stop for a brief chat when they had time now turned into a curt nod at absolute max. It was as though they felt I was no longer deserving of their friendship for giving valid and informed criticism on a subject I am more than qualified to comment on.

Ok what's this "agenda" then? Because I've posted things which are both critical of the police in some cases, and supportive/defending the police in others. I'm struggling to see how I can have an "anti police agenda" when I've sometimes supported them and defended them. There was even one thread quite a while ago where it was literally me, Deep Purple, and Monkey Moo in agreement the police were right, versus almost everyone else who thought they were wrong. Some "anti police agenda" there eh....

Yep I did think of them as friends. They'd always stop for a quick chat when they could, always friendly, engaging with the community. Then one day during our frequent chats there was some video in the news about an arrest, and I said something like "Hmm...don't think I can really see what justification he had for that amount of force" and immediately they got kind of arsey, saying that it's very different when you're in that situation and your heart is racing and adrenaline going and you just have a split second to think what to do. I bet they wouldn't have given the same condescending lecture to a fellow officer, but for some reason they assumed I wouldn't know? I just chalked it up to them having a tough day and assumed we'd put it behind us, but nope, next time I saw them completely blanked. And at best, it was just a curt nod from then on, if that. I think it's pretty sad that they are so unwilling to listen to informed criticism that they completely blank someone they've known and chatted to happily in the past. I think it's very immature, as it's basically responding to criticism by sticking your fingers in your ears and going la la I can't hear you. If they'd had the time, why not have a proper debate about it, like they would if a fellow copper said the same thing I did. Or just a "Nah mate, we aren't gonna agree on that" and we could have all moved on.
