Corbyn and Brexit

Corbyn and Brexit

Postby Gigabit » Fri Jun 22, 2018 6:54 pm

I understand why Corbyn feels the need to "walk a tightrope" on Brexit but personally, I'm finding it increasingly difficult for me to support him with his Brexit position.

We see today Airbus are going to pull out of the UK. The Labour Party need to start being a LABOUR Party IMHO.

Corbyn has changed his mind so many times on Brexit it's hard to keep up
Latest version was ABSTAIN.
Which particular version of Corbyn's policy do you want to discuss?

Why hasn’t he stamped out anti Semitism in the Labour Party already
It’s been 2 years since that report was published
Even Livingstone had to sack himself.

A new Jeremy Corbyn-backing group is today urging the Labour leader to support a fresh referendum and steer his party away from Theresa May’s “kamikaze” Brexit.

The grassroots campaign - Labour for a People’s Vote - includes an economist who has advised the shadow chancellor John McDonnell, and the transport union boss Manuel Cortes.

The group claims the effects of Brexit would make the prospects for a socialist Labour government “much worse” and places pressure on Mr Corbyn, who has repeatedly said the party is not supporting another referendum.

The pressure continues to build. It's only a matter of time before Labour is united in opposing Brexit.

The Maybot managed to secure an uneasy consensus in December when she announced the Treasury and the EU had agreed a figure around £39bn for the 'divorce bill'.

In a new report, the PAC said Treasury estimates missed “potentially significant” costs such as setting up new post-Brexit customs and trade arrangements and participating in EU schemes after leaving the EU, which taxpayers could pay into for years to come.

It now seems the Treasury’s previous estimates of £35bn to £39bn failed to take into account an additional £10bn of costs to the government, including £3bn towards the European Development Fund, which provides overseas aid.

Some payments could continue up to 2064, the committee claimed, which will infuriate Brexiteers who are keen to make a clean break with the EU.

To add to Tory embarrassment at being caught lying, cross-party MPs also tore into the prospect of a “Brexit dividend”, saying any benefit from cash clawed back from Brussels was difficult to calculate and could take years to materialise.

Critics have attacked Treeza for claiming that a promised £20bn NHS boost could be funded partly by money the UK sends to Brussels.

Seems critics (and the rest of us who don't believe in free unicorns for all) were right - she was lying.

Tories LIE. Never, ever trust a Tory.

And if it's stopped and the UK remains in the EU, what will that do to voting, any other referendums and trust in general of politicians and government/parties? Don't like next election result? Let's run it again. It's no good hiding behind legal and advisory, when the people are offered to have their say in determining something, they expect to have the decision honoured. That's the heart of democracy.

Ignoring democracy when it's inconvenient is no way to behave. It's banana republic territory and sets a dangerous precedent.

(this is not about which is right or wrong, it's about upholding the very basis this country runs on. Democracy)

The people are entitled to be consulted on what Brexit actually means for them now that the smoke, mirrors and lies are beginning to clear. There's nothing undemocratic about that.

And the people are entitled to change their will.

Are we really too damned proud (or stupid) to admit that we as a people have made what appears to be a grave mistake that threatens the very foundations of the nation ?

When the NHS has gone, the economy devastated, we have none of the wonderful 'free trade agreements' promised, and we are being flooded with American hormone flooded, Chlorine washed meat - it will all be too late to go back.

The real heart of democracy is the will of an INFORMED people, voting on the basis of knowledge, properly briefed and able to see a clear picture. That obviously wasn't the case 2 years ago, and it's up to the government to lead from the front and lay out the 'deal' with the EU in all it's glory.

Then, and only then, can a proper, grown up decision be made. Accept the deal, we leave and await the deliveries of unicorns and fairy dust. Reject, we eat humble pie, admit our catastrophic error of judgement and stay. Neither choice is perfect. But hey, that's democracy. At least we will know what we voted on this time.

Personal opinions on what is right or wrong have no bearing on the fundamentals of democracy. The right of the public to have their decision upheld in a national vote. Another vote, disguised as whatever they choose, would still be an affront to the system relied on for a very long time.
