Completed week 5 on Sunday and the final session was the toughest so far: 20 minutes continuous running.

The session made me remember something - there is a large mental component to running. The first five minutes I kept on thinking "I can't do this". Then a couple of great tracks came on my playlist which distracted me and suddenly another ten minutes had passed. From then on it was the countdown and I completed the run without issue.

Diet is finally clicking and the no booze rule is helping at lot in this regard. I haven't had a drink for about nine - ten days (being the sober one at my friends' party - in the pub no less - was a novel experience) and I intend to carry this on for another 21 days.

This is a good thing because in a state of drunken bravado at the cricket previously I agreed to do the Berlin Half Marathon in April 2019 with some friends. I had (conveniently) forgotten until they started badgering me about it recently.

Registration is in, flights and hotel booked.

God help me.

Just a quick one to say I've completed week 6 of the training programme (the last session being a 22 minute run - smashed it.)

Diet's going well. No booze really helps. I'm already noticing a change in appearance. I should dig out the weighing scales which must be around somewhere.

Watch out for the bones, we are better designed for walking. Running increases the stress on the bones to 40 % of their breaking tolerance and even less if you are over weight. If you can walk 6 mile less than an hour. It works different muscle groups especially cardio. An excellent decision dropping booze, it is the sugars that give us the gut. Good luck.

Week 7 of the training plan done and I'm still not dead (much to everyone's surprise.)

The 3 sessions last week were all continuous running ones with no walking intervals at all with the last one being 25 minute. All good and my puny calves have finally stopped complaining so much.

Diet's going well. No booze for about 3 weeks now and good food choices have made all the difference. I think I'll carry on being rigid with my diet for a few more weeks but I think I'm coming close to losing as much weight as I can get away with before looking like I've come straight off the boat. All my clothes are starting to fit nicely again so I must have been outrageously bloated before!

I take it you've checked your BMI.

Nah.

I go by look, feel and performance. I don't weigh myself that often as a result but at a guess I would say I'm in the healthy range for my height.

Finished Week 8 of the training plan on Sunday. All three sessions last week were continuous runs, the last one being 30 minutes. According to the app I should now be able to run a 5k within that time but I'm not tracking my pace or distance so I have no idea if that is true or not. I doubt it though as my running feels a bit slow.

I'm taking the week off running to allow some recovery (that and I'm being a bit lazy) but will be back on it next week.

Diet is going well. Still no booze but that will probably change on Saturday as we are seeing friends that are coming in from overseas. I have increased the size of my meals to keep my weight stable for the time being but feel and look very good so I'm happy.

Onwards friends. Ever onwards.

Calm down Paula Radcliffe. I'm only having a week off!

I'll do a 5k race at some point this year (and a 10k hopefully) just not right now.

Finished Week 9 of the training plan on Sunday (after a splendid week off from training.)

Each session during the week consisted of 4 intervals comprising 10 minutes running followed by 1 minute walking sandwiched between a warm up and cool down.

It was challenging but within my capabilities. I think my mind needs as much training as my body as I know I can run that amount but before every session I had a brief moment of panic thinking "I can't do this.

Nothing to report on the diet front which is still going well. I am drinking again but only when socialising. I had a lovely meal with friends on Saturday night at Hawksmoor in Knightsbridge which never fails to disappoint. I had (amongst other things) the 400g ribeye with triple cooked chips and anchovy hollandaise with some session IPAs to drink which was amazing. My kind of meal through and through.

Until the next time my friends.
