Is that whisky?
A friend got me onto Amaretto Sours recently, they're gorgeous!
Juice of half a lemon, 1 measure of Amaretto over crushed ice and a cherry.

Very wise - alcohol does little to enhance health or life.

Like most things which are bad for you, but do you want to be here for a good time or a long time? This is the eternal question as the two are often mutually exclusive.

I'm told that alcohol helps break down inhibitions and therefore eases social and sexual discourse. Once you've learned to socialise and seduce without it then what use does it have?

Most alcoholic drinks taste nice. One of my best friends drinks very little, but I don't judge him for it. Everybody has a mission statement for what they are going to do when they are alive. It'd be pretty boring if we were all the same, e.g. some people like to drink, some don't. The main problem I have with people that drink too much is when they become violent and abusive. I've always maintained that drink brings out the 'real you' in many people.

Many things taste nice but they don't have to poison you.
And it is a waste of life to rely on substance abuse to bring out the "real you". Any enlightened person strives to know themselves in the calmness of sobriety. Self-awareness is goal of course, not an inevitable destination.

Now you're getting philosophical. Frankly, I doubt the majority of people care and that includes those who don't drink.
As for life, it's meaningless in the scheme of things as you can't take any of it with you when you die. Existential nihilism essentially. Some people believe in an afterlife and/or re-incarnation, but I don't. Hang on a mo, there's already another thread about this.
ETA. Many things can poison you, even drinking too much water.
