Not sure what made you think Labour would vote for something that has no chance of winning. They will abstain.

However, once A50 has been extended and no concensus has emerged (my deal or no deal) the second referendum becomes a viable proposal that can be pushed by Labour.

Motion for extension to call for a referendum failed. So if we're going to have a referendum sometime in the future (that will require an extension) then presumably that means we can leave with no deal if we're just going to ignore the results of the motions.

It comes after the People's Vote campaign said it was the wrong time for the amendment

MPs have voted to reject holding a second referendum on leaving the EU.

It was the first time MPs had a chance to vote on a people's vote and they rejected it by 334 votes to 85 - a majority of 249.

The call was put in an amendment by former Tory now Independent Group MP Sarah Wollaston.

But after being selected it quickly became clear that it did not have enough support to pass the house.

Thats not really accurate. Benn's amendment called for MPs to take charge of the house next week, in order to have ways forward debated, and indicative votes taken. However, May fully intends to bring back her bloody awful, completely discredited plan for a THIRD time hoping that the ERG etc will chicken out and wave it through.

If it fails (and it should) May has agreed that at that point those same debates and votes on a way forward will take place. She will have to extend A50 at that point.

If there was ever the wrong end of the stick, we could always rely on Drongo to grab it.

Labour will still, as planned, push for an election. Then a deal including a customs union, etc. If that fails, the next possibility is a second referendum. Doubtless all possibilities will arise if (and when) Treeza's miserable deal is voted out yet again. She has already promised talks and indicative votes for viable solutions - and that is the point at which a People's Vote may be the only alternative that can get through parliament.
