Revealed: Rich kids get grass and poor children get mulch in separate have and have-not play areas in same multi-million pound development with mixed housing

Baylis Old School complex in south London was completed in 2016 and consists of 149 units in former school
The site is divided between homeowners and rent-paying social housing tenants in a block called Wren Mews
Developer Henley Homes has banned children of social housing tenants from using the lush green play area

The huge grassy play area for the 'privileged' children is surrounded by a three foot high wooden fence which only be accessed from the private flats .

Instead the 'poorer' children must contend themselves with a different play area cover in wood bark on the other side on the other side of the building which is a fraction of the size.

Planning documents approved by Lambeth Council showed gates giving access to the main play area from all of the flats, and Henley Homes boasted that 'common areas are there for the use of all the residents'.

But after permission was granted the developer altered plans to replace the gates by Wren Mews with impassable hedges after getting the go ahead from the council, reported Guardian Cities.

Too poor to play: children in social housing blocked from communal playground

At least one multimillion-pound housing development in London is segregating the children of less well-off tenants from those of wealthier homebuyers by blocking them from some communal play areas.

Image

Guardian Cities has discovered that developer Henley Homes has blocked social housing residents from using shared play spaces at its Baylis Old School complex on Lollard Street, south London. The development was required to include a mix of “affordable” and social rental units in order to gain planning permission.

That is actually very sad. Children aren't usually bias or discriminate against colour or social standing. It's what the parents teach them.

I saw Fletch had posted something similar in the random thread but there was so much going on that it got overlooked

it's a disgrace, nothing less than apartheid based on social class

I tried to find a positive spin, like maybe there is less social housing so they need less outdoor space (proportionally) but even if that is the case how can you justify that sort of segregation

Quite so, Holly. Whatever our differing views we should leave the children out of it.

Oh I totally agree with you. What are the parents of the poorer kids supposed to tell them about not being able to play in the same area as the others?...It's just cruel and I can't believe this is allowed.

You can't.

It shows how 'cocooned' a life some privileged people live and that they need to get a reality check into what life is really like for many people.

Last night, for instance, a woman from some really posh area (who was spending thousands on a few handbags, watches and jewellery) had to live with a single mum of two children in London struggling to make ends meet and it was a major wake up call for the wealthy woman. It was literally a meeting of opposites. I was impressed by how good a job the single mother was doing bringing up the children in very difficult circumstances.

It turned out the wealthy woman was pretty down to earth in reality, just spoilt rotten. It was quite moving when the single mum took this woman into the mean streets of London where the latter broke down in tears claiming never to have seen anything like that IRL. However, it's everyday life for many people.

I've moved the posts from the random thread, as for some reason even knowing there was a new thread started on it, a poster (who shall rename nameless) decided to bump the older post in the random thread

hope it's not too confusing

They're claiming it's because the social housing tenants "don't contribute" to the upkeep. That seems quite petty as the development would not even have happened without the social housing. The local authority should have insisted on either proper access when the plans were being approved or agreed to pay a little from the rent they get from their tenants towards it as I bet the rents aren't that cheap either.

Even this government condemn Henley Homes - how low then are those who do not? :shake head:

'Outrageous' and 'disgusting': segregated playground sparks fury

Jeremy Corbyn, James Brokenshire and Sadiq Khan criticise Henley Homes for excluding social housing residents from playground

The government has joined widespread condemnation of developers who blocked children living in social housing from using the playground on a London development.

The Conservative housing minister, James Brokenshire, called the situation on the Baylis Old School site in Lambeth “outrageous”. He said the developers, Henley Homes, and the local council should immediately change the site.

Mealy mouthed excuse after the act to try and justify it. As per the article:

But after permission was granted the developer altered plans to replace the gates by Wren Mews with impassable hedges after getting the go ahead from the council, reported Guardian Cities.

I have no desire to watch poverty porn pushed by the msm. They are a big part of the problem, channel 4 and 5 particularly. Years of using the poorest and least aware people on the cheap for entertainment is despicable. Not a lot different from the early days of circus and pay to see the 'outcasts' of society because they were different. Someone for others to look down on or criticise or just laugh at. We as a society have meant to have moved on from that sort of thing.
