This is actually the only suggestion to replace the backstop that I've seen. What a time to be alive...

This is actually bollox. It's back to front.
The UK has repeatedly said that there will not be any need for border checks on the UK side
It's actually the EU that insisting on a hard border
It's the EU threatening the Good Friday agreement.

The open border between Ireland and Northern Ireland was established in 1923.
Long before the EU was even thought of.
It's the EU buggering it all up. Not the UK

Ah, so - it's the EU leaving the UK, not the UK leaving the EU. :pmsl:

"It's the EU threatening the Good Friday agreement."

The EU didn't hold a referendum.

The EU didn't vote for Brexit.

The EU has the integrity of standards for all member countries to uphold - an open border allowing free flow of unchecked imports from a 3rd country can't happen.

Blame Cameron.

Blame Fromage.

Blame 17.4m who voted for this madness.

Blame rabid Brexiteers who refuse to comprehend the realities of the Good Friday Agreement.

But you can't blame the EU - none of this was their idea.

What countries outside of the EU and its affiliate countries does the EU not have a hard border with?

Germany of the brink of recession as 'economic gloom deepens'

A No Deal Brexit could be enough to push Germany over the edge, as it would affect their exports further still.

I doubt that a minor recession in Germany will have much effect on them.

They have a superbly robust economy, well run and managed, they have a strong currency and low interest rates.

They also sell stuff that the world actually wants.

Quite a contrast to the UK then - we will be deep in recession by Christmas if current forecasts are anywhere near right.
