New DWP minister Therese Coffey is an MP who recommended the limit on Fixed Odds Betting Terminals in shops be lifted. Ladbrokes then paid for her and her staff to have a day out at the races...

She employs her sister as a 'secretary'.

And the word is, she's actually Mark Francois in a wig.

LMAO - you think a day out at the races (roughly £10-25 admission fee, depending on the meeting. Plus any food thrown in, if indeed it was) constitutes some sort of bribe, for recommending removing the limit on the multi billion pound fixed-odds betting industry?

As for employing her sister as a secretary, she wouldn't be the first MP to employ a family member would she?

What did you think of Kate Osamor, Labour MP for Edmonton, employing her convicted drug dealer son as a 'senior communications officer'? Something she had to later resign over.

As far as I'm aware, Coffey's sister isn't a convicted felon, and is entitled to work as a secretary. So what's your problem?

When was the last time you enjoyed a corporate hospitality day at the races ?

I went to Cheltenham on one of those on Gold Cup day.

Started with transport to the course, complementary Racing Post and Timeform. Breakfast was served in the Imperial Commander room (balcony overlooks the finish) at 10.30am, and the bar was open all day (free). Steve Smith Eccles (ex-jockey) popped in to give his tips for the day, Lunch was served then the racing began. Afternoon tea followed at around 4pm. We had our own tote window for betting. Finally, and being well up because Imperial Commander actually won and many of us backed it, it was transport back to the hotel, freshen up and out for a (complimentary) night clubbing in a mental Cheltenham town.

All for a tenner.



And just so you know, I condemned Kate Osamabor at the time, and would again. Two wrongs don't make a right though, do they?

Finally, did you know that our new DWP Minister is renowned for once having the highest MPs expenses in the whole of parliament ? And she lives in Suffolk, not Stornaway…

Therese Coffey has more faces than the town hall clock.

When she first became MP for Suffolk Coastal, a proposal was made that ships be allowed to refuel off the Suffolk Coast which she heartedly endorsed until it was pointed out to her that her predecessor John Gummer had actively campaigned against this practice for environmental reasons and eventually had it stopped. She suddenly changed her mind and said it shouldn't be allowed!

The ConDems wanted to privatise the Forestry Commission because this was going to somehow make management of the nation's woodlands more efficient. Once again Coffey thought this was a cracking idea until her constituency office got inundated with complaints from voters who were aghast at the fact that they would no longer have access to the extensive woods and forests in the Suffolk coastal area - eg Rendlesham Forest - for recreational purposes. Once again the principleless Coffey decided on reflection that the Forestry Commission should remain in public hands.

As for her employing her sister I don't have a problem with that or indeed any politician employing members of their own family provided they are capable of doing the work required. At least Coffey's sister is getting paid unlike Chuka Umunna's proposed intern who wouldn't have been paid a bean. Chuka's a Blairite whatever political party he's attached himself to so you won't find any criticism of him from fellow Blairite Cannydc

I abhor nepotism in any shape or form, regardless of political party.

A secretarial job like that. paid for with public funds, should be openly advertised and the best applicant given the post. I'm surprised you are against this.
