Prominent US public health adviser Dr Anthony Fauci appeared on Sunday to confirm a bombshell New York Times report which said he and other Trump administration officials recommended the implementation of social distancing to combat the coronavirus in February, but were rebuffed for almost a month.

The briefings were given by Dr Fauci to The President.

They weren't given to Nancy Pelosi.
They weren't given to Joe Biden.
They weren't given to MSNBC.
They weren't given to whatever code name Neo-Nazis are calling The Jews this week
They definitely WERE given to Donald Trump.

If, as Donald Trump claims, he hadn't disbanded the Bio Hazzard Response Team then when he received those briefing and did not enact the 'Playbook' he utterly failed in his primary duty to protect the American people and tens of thousands have died because of him.

So far in the USA it's 31,633 - which apparently is less than 15 if you use Donald Trump Maths.

But what's most worrying isn't just the number of deaths it's what statisticians call the R 0, or for the USA I guess it's R Zero, value. That's the number of people each person with the disease is likely to infect.

Essentially all of Trumps policy was based on the old notion that Covid19 had an R Zero value of somewhere around 1.3, meaning each infected person could infect between 1 and 2 others each day and the disease would spread relatively slowly. That estimate has been revised upwards many, many times because unlike religious people and Trump voters when a scientist is presented with new evidence they consider it rationally and change their opinion as appropriate.

Now America has the highest transmission rate - the steepest curve if you like - of any country and rather than reinforceing the idea that social distancing is the only thing that's going to bring the R value down - to use the accepted language to 'flatten teh curve' Trump is openly toying with the idea of abandoning the strategy that's working - and that's diluting the message that the Administration needs to be sending.
