45K to tell gypsies not to eat horses

WHITEHALL chiefs paid a PR firm £45,000 to teach gypsies about an EU rule asking people to promise not to EAT their horses.
The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs gave the cash to Linstock Communications to "raise awareness" among travellers of the bizarre Brussels law change.

Under the move, owners had to sign a legal document promising not to dine on their animals. Refusal meant jail or an unlimited fine. Labour feared gypsies would not know about the change. But DEFRA ignored its own team of 20 taxpayer-funded press officers and spent £45,810 with Linstock on the 2009 campaign.

If they don't eat them, I will gladly help out.

Horse is delicious if cooked well.

Children should not be feed horse meat - it's leaves them with an iodine deficiency.

The children not the horses.

Being a horse lover I can't understand why anyone would want to eat horse meat, but on the other hand you could equally say the same about any meat full stop.

Then again being a horse lover I would be opposed full stop to farming them specifically for meat, just as I would be for farming dogs or cats for meat.

Personally i could never eat horse meat, just doesn't seem right to me to be eating it. Same goes for certain other animals as well.

I went to Paris a long time ago and ate horse inadvertantly. We were only told after we ate it what it was and very nice it was too.

That's not to say I don't love horse's I do.

Asking gypo's not to eat horse is like asking Muslims not to eat Halaal! :whogives:

One of the funniest things I've heard recently was the fact about a group of Gypsies that took horses into a pub in the Bexley area, i'll have to try to look it up but it was in the shopper. The sad thing is they had to close the pub down after it happened. I don't know if it's been re-opened. I wish I was there it I would not have stopped laughing.

Back to my point - Can you prove they don't eat horses? if they've never eaten horses why spend large amounts trying to persuade them otherwise.

They didn't spend large amounts doing any such thing.

The money was spent to persuade travellers to have their horse chipped to comply with some EU/DEFRA regulations.

People have been eating horse meat for the longest time. Italy and South America are known for this. FFS even Gordon Ramsey and Jamie Oliver were raving about it not too long ago
